About Us

Acounten LLC is a small business consultancy providing fractional CFO, DCAA compliance, bookkeeping, and tax services. The name Acounten comes from the etymology of the word accounting. It is a form of the Middle English verb accounten, which means “to account”. Founded in Raleigh, North Carolina - but currently headquartered in the SF Bay Area - Acounten serves clients nationwide and specializes in the unique requirements of small professional service firms and government contractors. James Skinner, ABA, CRTP is sole member/manager of Acounten LLC and principal consultant. As an Accredited Business Accountant/Advisor (ABA) and California Registered Tax Preparer (CRTP), he is committed to helping small business owners know their numbers, keep clean and compliant books, and avoid unnecessary tax bills. James’ career began in the financial services industry where he worked for more than a decade in community banks and credit unions. After falling in love with accounting and leaving his banking career behind, James worked as controller for small government contractors before deciding being a solo accounting consultant was his true calling. James holds a B.S. in economics and a graduate certificate in accounting. James is also a member of the National Society of Accountants and National Association of Tax Professionals.
